We believe exercise is a vital ingredient to any healing process as much as what goes into your body. Proprioception exercises and low back, neck, and mid-back stabilization procedures are among the valuable programs we offer. We look at the individual’s body as a whole and make our assessment based on what we feel you will be able to achieve, and you set the goal on where you want to be. We guide you to that outcome.
Proprioception is the body’s ability to transmit a sense of position, analyze that information and react (consciously or unconsciously) to the stimulation with the proper movement (Houglum 2001). Put simply, it is the ability to know where a body part is without having to look. Taken as a whole, proprioception includes balance, coordination and agility because the body’s proprioceptors control all these factors.
By improving your proprioception, you can gain the balance skills necessary to maintain stability; hone you agility so you can quickly change direction when necessary; and fine-tune coordination skills so you can perform physical activities accurately and consistently. Athletic ability in sports, ie golf, racketball, tennis, baseball, basketball, bicycling, etc., and all activities that require hand-eye coordination.
Proprioception exercises reduce the risk of injury by teaching the body to react appropriately to sudden changes in the environment. The exercises are also helpful in reducing low back pain.
Cardiovascular and strengthening exercises combined with chiropractic care are important in the management of low back pain. Stabilization exercise program has become a popular treatment method in spinal rehabilitation. Studies have shown that specific exercise program reduces pain and disability in chronic low back pain as well as helping acute low back pain by reducing recurrence rate (Ferreira et al., 2006).
Along with exercise, proper stretching of the muscles will help maintain normal range of motion and provide relief for muscles. The goal of a stretching exercise is to increase elasticity and flexibility, throughout the body, with special focus on the spine. Just as with the exercises, stretches will be specifically designed to meet your individual needs.
Specific programs are designed for each patient to bring them to optimum performance.
Core stability is the strengthening of the muscles surrounding the back and abdomen, known as the “powerhouse muscles” or “core”. These muscles provide a solid base upon which all other muscles can work upon to initiate movement. Along with supporting activities of everyday life and keeping you fit, comprehensive strengthening program of these core muscles can be used for:
Core stability is an essential component of any rehabilitation program not only for low back pain, sacroiliac pain and Gilmore’s Groin but also for other injuries such as hamstring strain and shoulder pain. By providing stability beneath the muscles that provide movement, core stability provides excellent rehabilitative properties for such injuries and is a common treatment method.
