The Sciatic Nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It extends from the spinal column all the way down through the legs to the feet. Sciatica is a condition affecting the Sciatic Nerve that is very painful. The pain can radiate through the buttock, the back of the leg and even into the foot. It can affect one or both sides. Often, it is severe. If is a knife-like pain, although sometimes its a numb or tingling sensation in the leg and foot. Adjusting position or posture doesn’t seem to relieve it. It is also unpredictable and can affect the function of the hip and lower leg.
Compression of the Sciatic Nerve is usually is the cause of Sciatica. This happens where the nerve exits the spinal column. This compression is usually caused by years of poor posture, pregnancy, muscle strain, wearing high heels, excess weight, or sleeping on a mattress that is just too soft. Bending, lifting, coughing, sneezing, and other sudden or strenuous actions can make it worse. Sciatica frequently is the symptom of a slipped disc or inflammation of the nerve, occasionally caused by osteoarthritis.
Chiropractic care can give you more effective, long-term relief from the effects of sciatic nerve pain. Analgesics can only provide temporary relief and often only reduce the pain as opposed to the preferential elimination of the pain. Chiropractic care addresses the cause of the problem by adjusting the pressure on the sciatic nerve. The pressure on the sciatic nerve is reduced or eliminated by chiropractic care relieving the radiating burning pain and any other symptoms.
A study was done of patients suffering from lower back with pain radiating down the leg. The results were an astounding 90% of those patients had their pain relieved by chiropractic care.
